What to wear

There are no definite rules for what you should or shouldn’t wear for your photo session. Wear clothing that reflects you and your family’s style! Certain colors and style choices look better when photographed than others.

Confidence
Wear clothing you feel you feel good in! If you are uncomfortable, it will show in your pictures. If you are uncomfortable with your arms don’t wear a sleeveless shirt.

Colors and Patterns
Think of the shoot location when you are picking out colors. If you want to pop from the background, pick a bright, complimentary color. If you are going for a subtle look, pick a neutral color that is different but still complimentary of the surroundings. Avoid logos and avoid neon colors. Bright colors can wash out pale skin (think pastel or neutral). Patterns can look great in pictures as long as they are not overdone. Add balance by adding a solid layer or with groups, alternating patterns and solid clothing between family members.

Coordination
Wear clothes that have the same level of dressiness or casualness. When coordinating outfits, rather than everyone wearing the same shade, try picking similar shades or accent colors.

Layering
Clothing often photographs better when layered. Color blocking breaks up an outfit and is flattering.  Finish your look with a cardigan or jacket, but avoid bulky items. Accessories also look great in photos.

Dress for the weather
Nothing can cut a photo session short faster than a cold and upset child. Avoid this by layering up and bringing a jacket, gloves, hat, etc.

Makeup
Even if you don’t normally wear makeup, cameras have a way of picking up uneven tones on our faces. Foundation evens out skin tones. Concealer covers blemishes, redness, and under eye circles. Powder reduces facial shine. Blush creates high cheekbones. Eye drops brightens eyes and removes redness. Wear freshly applied neutral colored nail polish.

Hair
Let a new haircut grow for at least a week.  Men, avoid stubble by shaving right before session.

Final Touches
Don’t forget to match your shoes.
Make sure you are well rested.
Iron clothing.
Avoid sunburn.
Unclutter your pockets. Leave sunglasses & phone in car.
